The Steely Dan tribute band Steely Jam performed live for the community on July 22, a warm Sunday evening. As the golden sunshine waned, it became clear there were two groups of people watching the concert: those who remember the 1970s and those who, well, have never operated a rotary phone.

Despite the divide, Playa Vistans of all ages sang and danced to the smooth groves that felt like a trip backwards to a simpler time. The band played “FM,” “Peg” and even brought out the wind chimes for “Ricky Don’t Lose That Number” — my own personal karaoke favorite.

Frontman Michael Lamper encouraged the crowd to sing along with the final refrain of “Hey 19”: “The Cuervo Gold, the fine Colombian, make tonight a wonderful thing.” At the end of the show, Lamper put the microphone in front of six-year-old Joseph Naiman, who said joyfully, “I love this music!”
