Choosing a hairstyle is one of the hardest parts of preparing for a wedding.
Braids, side part, middle part, updo and low bun, what’s one to do?
Bridget Lopez with Bonita Salon in Marina del Rey shares the trends she sees in bridal hair.
“It’s nice to be part of someone’s big day and share that moment with them,” says Lopez, who followed in her hair stylist mom’s footsteps. “There’s chaos going on all around. The bridal party is there. We’re there to help her calm down and relax. It’s a special day.”
First, the appointment
Typically, brides visit with Lopez a year before the big day to plan color appointments. It’s important to ensure that a color appointment fall just before the wedding.
“Typically, I have them come in, probably, eight to 10 weeks before the wedding date for a cut, color and conditioning treatment.” Two weeks before the wedding, a bride will come in to touch up extensions and finalize the color, balayage or highlights. “If they’re getting married here, they come in the day before for a blowout. “That way, the hair is prepped for the next day.”
Trend: Extensions
“A lot of women want to feel glamorous,” she says. “I’ve been adding a lot of extensions to clients’ hair.” The timing varies with the types of extensions. If a woman wants clip-in extensions, it takes about 30 minutes. Permanent extensions can take upward of three hours from start to finish, with hair styling. “We can play with the color of the extensions to give texture and dimension.”
Trend: Low buns
“It’s a newer thing,” she says. “I’ve been doing hair for a long time and I’ve done a lot of sleek, lower buns. It gives it a really clean look, more structure.”
