Playa Vista’s retail hub will reactivate the street that runs through it as a pedestrian promenade
Inspired by the popularity of Runway Funday pop-ups and the local farmers market, the managers of Runway at Playa Vista say they will soon close the shopping and retail hub to automobile traffic, turning Runway Road into a bustling pedestrian promenade
As of early 2019, not even Teslas will be allowed to zip past Hal’s Bar & Grill.
Invesco Real Estate, which purchased Runway for a reported $475 million in 2016, and property managers DJM Capital Partners recently unveiled preliminary renderings for the new street configuration by the architectural and design firm Design, Bitches.
Though the change means closing one of three parking structure entrances, it promises to make Runway a safer, more inviting space to hang out. New outdoor seating, for example, will come in handy now that Whole Foods has removed its casual indoor dining tables (don’t worry, the Astro Pub remains open).
The bigger question that remains: Will this change help fill the empty retail spaces at Runway? Only time will tell, but this feels like an auspicious start.
