Trainer Tip – Positive Social Interactions

Katie McGuire, CPDT-KA

Every dog has unique preferences for how they socialize, or choose not to, with other dogs. Practice these habits when planning social outings:

• Find activities and fellow dogs that work for your dog’s play style. If their body language looks uncomfortable or like they could be reactive to another pet, that’s the chance to step in and prevent negative reactions.

• When arriving at a dog park or other gathering, stay with your dog while they play. Give your dog some space, but monitor activities to see what they’re doing and that communication between each dog continues being fun and safe.
