Super League Gaming kicked off its second season of competitive electronic gaming in February at Cinemark in Runway at Playa Vista. Area kids equipped with laptops, headphones and computer mice teamed up to compete against each other in the world of Minecraft, a popular sandbox game where users either build their own worlds from scratch or collect and craft materials to survive against unfriendly elements. Their game play was projected on the big screen with sound effects in real time.
Super League COO Brett Morris founded the eSports organization with a group of “L.A. dads” so that junior gamers, like his two daughters, would have a place to socialize and play after school, like he used to do when he hung out with his friends at arcades as a kid.
The kids think he’s onto something.
“It feels really cool,” says nine-year old Mailee Johnson of seeing her game play on the big screen.
