COVID-19 is impacting everything. Playa Vista has turned into a bit of a ghost town as people are trying to observe the Safer At Home order. Some of Runway’s restaurants are still open for take-out and delivery; please order from them and other local restaurants. The Resort & The CenterPointe Club are closed to visitors and all parks are closed to group and passive activities, but people can still walk or jog through them. Dogs are being walked, but there are few children in sight. Most kids are at home with their parents, engaging in a new adventure called distance learning.
Playa Vista Mom’s Group President, Amanda Goldman, shared some of her concerns with me about keeping her children safe during all this. Over the phone she told me she’s scared to let her kids go outside because they are too young to understand social distancing. Homeschooling them has been a separate, daunting challenge. But like other local moms and dads, she’s trying her best to be parent, protector and school teacher 24/7.
Playa Vista resident Patti Londre is working with her quilting group, Quilt from the Heart, to sew face masks and deliver them to local hospitals, Meals on Wheels, and the LAPD. Amin Amersi, owner of Hollyway Cleaners in Playa Vista, agreed to wash and press the large piles of fabric for free, to help the quilters get the masks out quickly. Thank you, Amin!
Local restauranteur Gaby Maaloouf, owner of Baja Catch & Grill and Gaby’s Mediterranean restaurants, is trying hard not to lay off any workers. He’s interviewed in this issue and I hope everyone will take-out some of his amazing fish tacos.
As we struggle to navigate this pandemic, I hope we can all stay home as much as possible, continue to wash our hands, wear our masks, and hug our loved ones tight. We are strong family units. We are scientific thinkers. We are kind to others. We will get through this.
